Black lives should worry about big banks. They do matter.

There is that. But there is also this interesting idea to consider: Blacks are more exposed to police harassment and lethal weapons because they are not feared. This point was made to me a few months ago by a local black comedian named the Big Funny.

What do I mean by “not feared”? Recall the macing incident last year at the Westlake Center. Recall how the mall cop was faced with dealing with either a white man or a black man as the potential source of trouble that had erupted during a pro-Palestine rally. Recall that he immediately picked, maced, and arrested the black man who’d done nothing, Raymond Wilford.

Now, one could say that the mall cop was a racist for automatically assuming that the black man was the source of the trouble, and not the white man. But from the white mall cop’s perspective, it was also much safer for him to take action against Wilford because, in general, blacks are poorer (and therefore, less trouble) than whites.

And I think this was Big Funny’s point: White cops do not side with white citizens only because they are of the same race but also because whites are more likely than blacks and Latinos to have the power and resources (both materially and in the form of time) to raise some serious hell. The fear of whites is about money (who has it and who does not), and money in America is not unrelated to big banks.

The Truth Hurts New CD Press Release

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 7, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Uproar Entertainment is pleased to announce the release of Travis Simmons’ newest comedy CD, “The Truth Hurts.” Simmons’ brilliant observations, amazing impressions, and astute political commentary are as compelling and authentic as they are hilarious. “The Truth Hurts” was recorded at The Comedy Underground in Seattle, Wash. and is Simmons’ first recording for Uproar Entertainment.

Travis Simmons has one very simple goal, and that is “to change the world for the better, one expressed thought at a time.” The Pacific Northwest phenom has played rooms big and small since launching his comedic career at a Comedy Underground open mic night in 1997. The night before, he had gone to an open mic night just to watch, saw a few people perform and thought to himself, “Hey, I can do that!” He went home, wrote a few jokes and went back the next night. His first words on stage were “What if Darth Vader was a pimp?” Since then, Simmons has firmly established himself as a local favorite and broadened his influence to the international stage, igniting fits of laughter in audiences everywhere he goes.

“The Big Funny – that’s a great name!” said Dave Chappelle.

Born in Milwaukee, Wis., Simmons is more than just your average comedian. A student of the Civil Rights Movement and outspoken human rights activist, Simmons makes it his business to be the voice of the people, for the people, addressing everything from racism to homophobia to women’s rights, both on and off the stage. In addition to his live comedy shows, Simmons’ Funny 4 Food charity shows have raised over $50,000 for food banks in Western Washington and the shows have now expanded to Oregon.

His Christmas events “Jokes for Little Folks” have generated 7,000 toys for kids in Seattle and Tacoma. Simmons has over 3 million video plays on YouTube and he is in the regular rotation on Raw Dog Comedy and Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. He is an impressionist, the winner of the “I Sound More like Bill Cosby than Bill Cosby” contest, 2nd runner-up in “The 2009 Seattle International Comedy Competition,” and 1st runner up at the 2013 Big Sky Comedy Competition.

When Simmons isn’t changing the world with his stand-up and philanthropic efforts, he finds other, equally enviable tasks to occupy his time. He is also the creator of FOCUS ON THE FUNNY, a stand-up comedy workshop, and in post-production on his first documentary, “Weed is Safer than Alcohol,” filmed at 2014’s Hempfest in Seattle, Wash. He runs a daily marathon podcast where he digs deep with other comedians on anti-racist and progressive ideas using his oratory skills to “…tell the truth to society, whether society wants to hear it or not.” He makes people laugh by being honest, telling the truth, and sprinkling in an impression or two. He is one of the good guys, dedicated to comedy for the sake of people.

Simmons is highly regarded, and widely applauded for both his entertainment value and his devotion to many worthy causes. He is a man of action, saying, “When bigots get loud, the good people have to get louder. Bigotry unchecked grows violent. The people with the gift of gab – orators, musicians, painters, documentarians – all artists have a responsibility to be loud about what we notice or we’re traitors to ourselves and the human race.” This big man with veteran chops and a booming voice that he uses to tame even the wildest road crowds is truly a force to be reckoned with in the comedy world.

Video Dave Chappelle Sets Respect Standard for Standup Comedy On Oddball Tour

The first thing you must know about Dave Chappelle last night at Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival is this crowd was a problem for the other performers as well. They were complaining about how rude this Hartford crowd was compared to last week in Texas.

If you can’t respect the comedian, you don’t get to see.   Can you imagine how much better it would be if MORE comedians walked out on disrespectful crowds?

Legend has it, that when Chappelle gets a great comedy crowd he does 3 or 4 HOURS OF MATERIAL. I want to see that show. Who wouldn’t that loves standup comedy.

No one knows what it is like to have “Half Baked” on your back. I saw a crowd in Seattle, yelling out quotes from that movie, at Dave Chappelle for an HOUR! Lewis Black opened for Chappelle and no one heckled him at all. The crowd in Seatle, yelled out Half Baked lines while Chappelle was talking so often that he just laid on a bean bag on stage, and talked to the people he could. 3,000 people in a Theater in Seattle BEFORE ANY OF US HEARD OF THE CHAPPELLE SHOW.

I can’t imagine what a crowd of 10-20,000 could do with numberous catch phrases from Half Baked COMBINED The Chappelle show, when they’ve been drinking for 3hrs before you hit the stage. A stage that was outside open air with all of the distractions.

George Carlin didn’t put up with YELLING SHIT OUT! And neither should we.

One of the saddest things is watching the Richard Pryor Here and Now with the heckles in the middle of MUDBONE!!”

There are some comedians that love it and are really good at dealing with anything. Some comedians are true artists, like Dave Chappelle, he’s our Miles Davis. People paid a lot of money to not just SEE HIM but LISTEN TO DAVE CHAPPELLE.

If Security would have removed them in a timely fashion, it might have chilled that out. Probably not. How about a new rule, if you get kicked out, your card gets charged an extra $500. That might have to be what you sign to see the show, so there’s a show.
